Norton Antivirus 2006 Crash during installation - exe file association lost
There have been reports of people having caused serious damage to their Windows XP operating system when installing a copy of Symantec's Norton Antivirus 2006 Upgrade Edition.
The system can crash during the installation of the disc and when the computer restarts, the desktop icons look different and clicking on them brings up a similar error message to:
This file does not have a program associated to it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel
WHAT'S HAPPENED
Norton Antivirus has crashed during installation. The point at which it has crashed has meant that the file associations for 'exe' executable programs has been removed and not recovered. The installation cannot be reversed or continued. The hard disk has not been erased or 'corrupted' as such but Windows XP is unable to run properly.
SOLUTION
At this time there is no straight-forward solution to this error. Symantec recommend a system restore to eliminate the problems it has caused - unfortunately this is not possible as no executable files can be run.
We recommend a clean Operating System installation. In order to back up your existing files, you will need to boot the PC (or another) from a different disc or partition so that you can view and copy the files from it. You will then need to re-install your Windows operating system from the original system discs.

If you have had a similar problem and been able to resolve it without a clean OS installation, please let us know how and we will post your solutions or links on this or a similar page. webmaster@evolved-it.co.uk
